What Is Interference in Chess?

Most tactics work by attacking something. Interference is different — the winning move often doesn't threaten anything at all. It just stands on a square between two of your opponent's pieces, and that alone is enough to win material or force mate.
What interference actually is
Interference happens when you place a piece on the line connecting an enemy piece to something it's defending — a square, another piece, the king. The moment your piece lands there, it blocks that line. The defender is still on the board, still "protecting" its target on paper, but it can no longer actually reach it. You've cut the wire without touching either end.
This is why interference is so easy to miss over the board: the move that does the damage frequently isn't a capture and isn't a check. It can look like you're simply dropping a piece into enemy territory for no reason, right up until you realize the defender behind it has gone silent.
The classic shape
Picture a rook defending a back-rank mate square along a file, with an enemy bishop sitting on that same file a few squares up. If you can drop a knight or a piece of your own onto a square between the rook and the mating square — ideally one where the interfering piece is itself immune to capture, defended, or delivers a threat of its own — the rook's defense is severed. The mate that was covered a moment ago is now undefended, and it lands on the very next move.
The interfering piece doesn't need to survive forever. Even a piece that gets captured on the spot can work, as long as capturing it costs the opponent a tempo they don't have, or opens a second problem for them. A sacrifice that blocks a defensive line for even one move is sometimes all a mating attack needs.
Interference vs. deflection and pins
These three tactics all involve messing with a defender's job, and it's easy to blur them together. A pin freezes a piece in place by threatening something more valuable behind it. Deflection drags a defender away from the square or piece it's guarding. Interference does neither — the defending piece never moves and is never directly threatened. Instead, you insert an obstacle onto the line it needs, so its "defense" becomes geometrically impossible without it doing anything wrong.
A useful test: if the tactic works because a defender got pulled somewhere, that's deflection. If it works because a defender is now too scared to move, that's a pin. If it works because something got put in the middle, between the defender and what it was guarding, that's interference.
Why it's hard to spot
Interference puzzles trip people up because the candidate move rarely looks forcing. You're trained to scan for captures, checks, and threats first — the standard checklist for finding tactics. An interference move often fails all three tests on the surface. It's only when you ask "what was defending what, and does this move sit on that line?" that the idea appears.
It also requires holding two pieces' relationship in your head at once: the defender, and the thing it defends, with a clear line between them. If you're only looking at pieces individually — is this piece attacked, is that piece safe — you'll walk right past the setup, because neither piece on its own looks like the target. The target is the connection between them.
How to train for it
When a position isn't yielding to the normal checks-and-captures scan, stop looking at pieces and start looking at lines. Pick out every defender on the board that's protecting something along a file, rank, or diagonal, and trace that line square by square. Ask whether you have any piece — even one that looks like it's walking into trouble — that can land on one of those empty squares. If placing a piece there breaks a defensive connection the opponent is relying on, you've found the tactic, whether or not the move itself makes a threat.
