What Is a Discovered Attack in Chess (And Why It Wins Material)

Most tactics work by attacking two things with one piece. A discovered attack does something stranger and far more dangerous: it attacks two things with two pieces, using only one move. Once you understand the mechanism, you'll start seeing these everywhere — and you'll notice how often they decide games outright.
What a discovered attack actually is
A discovered attack happens when you move one of your pieces out of the way, and by moving it, you unmask an attack from a piece sitting behind it on the same line — a rank, file, or diagonal.
The piece that moves and the piece that attacks are two different pieces. That's the whole trick. Your bishop steps aside and suddenly the rook behind it is staring down an undefended queen. The bishop wasn't the threat. It was the curtain.
And because the piece that moved is now somewhere new, it usually creates a threat of its own. One move, two threats, from two different attackers.
Why it's so hard to defend against
Every other tactic gives your opponent a way out. A fork can sometimes be answered by moving the more valuable piece and defending the other. A pin can be broken by challenging the pinning piece.
A discovered attack often can't be answered at all, because your opponent has to deal with two separate threats coming from two separate pieces on two separate parts of the board. There's rarely a single move that addresses both.
This is also why discovered attacks make such good sacrifices. The piece that steps aside can move somewhere completely absurd — right into the teeth of an enemy pawn — because capturing it doesn't do anything about the attack that just got revealed behind it.
Discovered check: the brutal version
Now replace the revealed attack with a check, and the tactic becomes nearly unanswerable.
When you unmask a check, your opponent is forced to respond to the check immediately. They cannot spend a move capturing the piece that stepped aside, and they cannot defend whatever that piece is now attacking. The check takes priority over everything.
So the piece that moves is effectively free to do whatever it wants for one move. Grab a hanging queen. Land on a square defended three times. It doesn't matter — the king has to be dealt with first, and by then it's too late.
Double check: the version with no escape
The most extreme form is a double check: the piece that moves also gives check, at the same time as the revealed piece.
This creates a unique situation in chess. Normally there are three ways to answer a check — capture the checking piece, block the line, or move the king. Against a double check, capturing helps you against only one of the two attackers, and so does blocking. The king must move. No exceptions.
That's why double checks show up at the finish of so many famous mating combinations. When you take away every defensive option except king moves, mating nets become much easier to construct.
How to spot them in your own games
Discovered attacks are easy to miss because you have to look at your position in an unusual way — you're not looking for what a piece attacks, you're looking for what a piece is blocking.
Three habits that help:
Look for your own pieces standing in front of your long-range pieces. Any knight, bishop, or pawn sitting on the same line as your queen, rook, or bishop is a potential discovery waiting to happen. Ask what would be attacked if that piece simply vanished.
Check whether the enemy king is on that line. If it is, you're not looking at a discovered attack — you're looking at a discovered check, and your options just got much wider.
Then ask where the front piece can go to cause the most damage. This is the step players skip. Once you know the discovery works, you get a free move with the front piece. Use it aggressively: attack the queen, fork two rooks, threaten mate. Don't settle for a quiet square when the whole point is that your opponent can't punish greed.
The pattern is worth drilling
Discovered attacks reward recognition more than calculation. The geometry is always the same — a blocker, a long-range piece behind it, and a target on the far end of the line — but it appears in hundreds of different piece configurations, which is exactly why it takes repetition to internalize.
Work through positions where the tactic is guaranteed to be there, and the shape starts to jump out at you in your own games without any conscious searching.
