How to Build a Mating Net

You've been taught to hunt for checkmate. Scan the board, look for a forcing check, see if it's mate. That works fine for one-move puzzles. It falls apart the moment the answer is three or four moves away, because none of those moves look like checkmate yet — some of them aren't even checks. What you're actually looking at isn't a single mating move. It's a mating net, and finding it means changing what you're looking for.
A mating net is a trap, not a move
A mating net is a sequence that removes a king's escape squares one at a time until the final check has nowhere to go. The individual moves that build it can look unremarkable — a pawn push, a bishop repositioning to a quiet diagonal, a knight hopping to a square that doesn't threaten anything yet. None of them are check. None of them capture material. What they share is that each one deletes a square the king could otherwise run to.
This is why mate-in-3 and mate-in-4 puzzles feel so different from mate-in-1s. A mate-in-1 rewards spotting the finishing blow. A mate-in-3 punishes you for looking for it too early, because the first move in the sequence usually isn't threatening anything at all — it's quietly taking away where the king was planning to go two moves from now.
Count squares, not threats
The habit that works here is to stop asking "what can I attack" and start asking "where can this king still go." Pick the enemy king and count its legal squares right now, including ones only reachable after a capture or a piece moves out of the way. That number is what you're trying to drive to zero.
Every square on that list falls into one of three states: covered by one of your pieces already, coverable by a piece that isn't there yet, or occupied by a piece of the king's own side blocking it in. A square already covered is done — ignore it. A square you can cover in one move is your next candidate. A square blocked by the king's own piece is often the most useful one on the list, because you don't have to do anything to it directly; you just have to make sure nothing forces it to move.
Once you're counting squares instead of hunting for a knockout blow, three-move mates stop requiring you to see the whole line in advance. You only need to see the next square to take away.
Recognizing a king that's already caught
The most useful skill here is realizing a king is lost well before you can calculate the mate. If a king has one legal square left, and that square is coverable by a piece you already have aimed roughly in the right direction, the position is over — even if you can't yet see the exact move order that proves it. You don't need the full line to know you're winning; you need to recognize the king's options have already been exhausted structurally. Once you see that, your job shifts from "find the win" to sequencing: which order delivers the final check without letting the king slip through a square you haven't covered yet.
Why the order of moves still matters
Taking away escape squares in the wrong order can let the king wriggle out through a square you meant to close later. If you cover square A before square B, and the king reaches B before you get to it, the net has a gap. This is the part that actually requires calculation, and it's worth doing after you've identified which squares matter, not before — figuring out the target squares first and the move order second is a much smaller problem than trying to do both at once.
A useful check: after each candidate move in your sequence, recount the king's legal squares. If the count doesn't strictly shrink — or if it grows because your move opened a new escape route while closing an old one — that move isn't tightening the net, no matter how natural it looks.
Watch for pieces already doing the covering
Mating nets get built faster when you notice pieces that are already restricting the king incidentally, as a side effect of where they sit for other reasons. A bishop on a long diagonal, a pawn still on its starting square, a rook controlling a file the king would need to cross — these are often doing the work before you make a single new move. Puzzles at this level are frequently solvable in fewer moves than they look, because two or three escape squares were already covered by pieces already on the board. Take inventory of what's already covering the king before deciding what's still needed.
Practicing the shift
Stop treating multi-move mate puzzles as "find the first move" problems. Before you touch a piece, count the king's legal squares and label each one covered, coverable, or blocked by its own side. Only then look for the move that closes the biggest gap. Do this consistently and puzzles that take four or five moves to resolve stop feeling like they require deep calculation — they start feeling like a checklist you're working through, one square at a time.
