How to Decide Your Next Move in Chess Puzzles

You stare at the board. You see a few candidate moves. Maybe one looks promising, maybe three do. How do you decide?

This is the core skill chess puzzles train — not memorizing patterns, but building a reliable decision process for choosing your next move under pressure. Here is a framework that works whether you are rated 800 or 1800.

Start with checks, captures, and threats

Before calculating anything deeply, scan for checks, captures, and threats (CCT). This is the single most important habit in puzzle solving.

  • Checks force your opponent to respond. They narrow the tree of possibilities dramatically, which makes calculation easier.
  • Captures change the material balance and often reveal tactical ideas hiding behind a piece.
  • Threats create problems your opponent must address on the next move, giving you the initiative.

Most puzzle solutions begin with one of these three. If you find yourself stuck, chances are you skipped this scan.

Narrow before you calculate

A common mistake is trying to calculate every legal move. There are typically 30+ legal moves in any position. You cannot brute-force them all — and you do not need to.

Instead, narrow your candidate moves to two or three using pattern recognition:

  • Is a piece undefended?
  • Are the king's defenders overloaded?
  • Is there a back-rank weakness?
  • Can a piece be deflected or decoyed?

Once you have a short list of candidates, then calculate each one move by move. Narrowing first, calculating second — this order matters.

Ask "what does my opponent do?"

After you find a move that looks strong, do not play it yet. Ask: what is my opponent's best response?

Many puzzle attempts fail not because the first move was wrong, but because the solver never checked the opponent's reply. Your candidate move is only good if it works after the best defense.

This is especially important in multi-move puzzles. The first move might be obvious, but the follow-up requires you to see how your opponent tries to escape.

Use the process of elimination

Sometimes the right move is hard to find directly but easy to find by ruling out alternatives. If you have three candidate moves and two of them clearly fail after the opponent's best reply, the third one must be the answer — even if you cannot fully calculate why it works yet.

This is a legitimate and efficient technique. Strong players use it constantly in time pressure.

Recognize when to slow down

Not all puzzles require the same depth of thought. Learn to recognize complexity signals:

  • Multiple pieces near the king: Likely a mating pattern. Look for sacrifices.
  • Imbalanced material: Someone may have a tactic to win material back or force checkmate as compensation.
  • Quiet position with one odd feature: The puzzle likely hinges on that single detail — a pin, an overloaded piece, an open file.

When you sense higher complexity, slow your scan. Spend more time on CCT. In simpler positions, trust your pattern recognition and move faster.

Put it into practice

The best way to internalize this framework is repetition. Solve puzzles daily, and before each move, consciously run through the steps:

  1. Scan for checks, captures, and threats.
  2. Narrow to two or three candidate moves.
  3. Calculate each candidate, checking your opponent's best reply.
  4. Eliminate the ones that fail.
  5. Play the survivor.

Over time this becomes automatic. That is when your rating starts climbing.
