Get More Out of Every Puzzle with AI Explanations

July 13, 2026

Solving a puzzle is only half the learning process. The other half is understanding why the solution works — and that's often the part that's easy to skip past, especially when you solve quickly or give up and just look at the answer.

What the AI explanation does

After you finish any puzzle — whether you solved it yourself or clicked "Show solution" — you'll see a Get AI explanation button. Click it, and you'll get a short, plain-language breakdown of the key tactical idea behind that specific puzzle: what pattern made the winning move work, why the obvious-looking alternative fails, or what the opponent's piece was actually doing on the board.

It's not a generic tactics lesson pulled from a textbook. Every explanation is generated fresh for that exact position, so it's tied directly to the puzzle in front of you.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Pattern recognition — the whole point of solving puzzles — comes from repetition plus understanding. If you solve a puzzle correctly but don't quite know why it worked, you're less likely to recognize that same pattern next time it shows up in a slightly different position. And if you fail a puzzle and just move on, you've missed the one moment where a mistake could have actually taught you something.

A quick explanation closes that gap. You don't need a coach standing over your shoulder to ask "wait, why does that work?" — you can just ask right there on the page.

A few tips for using it well

  • Try to explain it to yourself first. Even a rough guess before reading the AI's explanation helps you compare your own reasoning against the actual idea — that comparison is where a lot of the learning happens.
  • Use it on puzzles you failed, not just ones you solved. A missed puzzle explained well is often more valuable than an easy one you solved without thinking.
  • Don't feel like you need it every time. It's there for the puzzles that genuinely stump you, not as a replacement for the "aha" moment of figuring it out yourself.

A quick note on usage

Each account gets a limited number of AI explanations per day. This keeps the feature sustainable to offer for free while we figure out the right long-term setup — for now, use them where they'll help you most, and the limit resets every day.
